Excision endometriosis surgery is the current gold standard treatment for endometriosis, but why don’t our doctors tell us about it? Why don’t we see commercials for it like we do for various hormonal therapies to “treat” endometriosis? The answer is difficult and there are a lot of reasons I will reference here, but for now, I’ll break it down like this:

There are no insurance billing codes for excision surgery technique. It requires additional training that costs time and money for these specialists. Without insurance coverage, the surgeons do not get reimbursed. Additionally, a large majority of OBGYNs will focus on the obstetrics rather than the gynecology,

With little to no use for the additional specialty training, your ob-gyn will likely do simple ablation surgery. This type of endometriosis surgery is quick and simply burns off the surface of endometriosis lesions. Ablation surgery does not require any additional training and they can easily do it as an outpatient operation, but they do get properly reimbursed.

Endometriosis Hormonal Therapies
