Living with a chronic illness can make it difficult to remember that we are not defined by the disease(s). It is crucial for us to tell our stories outside of being ill and not forget that we are individuals with lives that include education, jobs, families, passions, and hobbies. We are so much more than being sick. Here is who I am.
My name is Katie, but I prefer Kate. I was born on April 11, 1988, in Shawnee, KS. I grew up in the country outside of the burbs, went to a small school, and was a dedicated tomboy. I was raised with horses, cats, dogs, and a variety of exotic animals that my grandfather raised. I spent my summers on my grandparent’s farm playing with miniature horses, sheep, and whatever other bizarre animals that were living there at the time. I loved going to exotic animal auctions where I would see zebras, camels, porcupines, exotic deer, exotic sheep, and various other exotic animals from all over the world. Many of these animals were rescued from people who would purchase these animals for novelty only to realize they could not be domesticated.
I began riding and showing horses by the age of 9, I was the flute captain in band, on the debate team, and was an attorney for youth court. I graduated high school in 2006 and took the next 8 years off and on from school before committing to Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO for my B.S. in Biochemistry. I conducted Astrophysics research during my time there, traveling to present my work. I was in the Physics Honor Society, American Chemical Society, American Chemistry Society club at school, and was inducted into the Jesuit Honor Society in 2017.
I struggled with alcohol for many years and got sober on November 17, 2014. It was the best decision of my life and I continue to share my sobriety story with those in need. I stay active in Alcoholics Anonymous because it keeps me grounded. I was diagnosed as Bipolar during the same time and began therapy that I also continue today. I take medication daily to manage my moods on a biochemical level, while therapy and AA keep me accountable for my behavior.
The scientist in me always prevails when I discuss health topics and my incessant need to adequately research a topic before sharing is always a top priority; anything I share will be fully vetted to the best of my ability and I will not let bogus information (especially health-related) ever get by me without being called out.
I am fully dedicated to helping those in need and I will fight with them every step of the way as long as they put in the work.
Love,
Kate
